The short answer
If your phone falls in water, switch it off at once, do not charge it, remove the case and SIM tray, and get it opened and cleaned by a repair shop within a day. Rice does not remove water from inside the phone; corrosion starts on the board within hours.
In the first minutes
- Switch the phone off, even if it still works.
- Do not charge it or plug it in.
- Take off the case and pull out the SIM tray.
- Wipe the outside dry and keep the phone upright.
- Do not use a hair dryer: heat can push water deeper and damage the screen.
Why rice does not help
Rice dries the outside but cannot reach water trapped under shields and connectors on the board. Minerals in the water keep corroding the board while the phone sits in the rice.
What a repair shop does
The phone is opened, the battery disconnected, and the board cleaned of corrosion with isopropyl alcohol and a brush, then dried and tested. The sooner this happens, the more likely the phone works again.
